The global coffee market recorded a notable decline in prices during September 2026 as increased Brazilian supply reached the market while international coffee trade continued to expand.
According to the International Coffee Organization’s September 2026 Coffee Market Report, the ICO Composite Indicator Price averaged 262.18 US cents/lb, down 8.7% from August 2026.
The decline was largely associated with increased availability from Brazil’s harvest and expectations of stronger supply.
At the same time, global green coffee exports reached 10.94 million 60-kg bags in August 2026, an increase of 15.6% compared with August 2025.
Coffee Prices in September 2026
All four major ICO group indicators declined during September.
Colombian Milds averaged 356.15 US cents/lb, down 8.1%, while Other Milds averaged 329.44 US cents/lb, down 8.8%.
Brazilian Naturals fell 9.9% to 290.19 US cents/lb, while Robustas declined 7.3% to 167.49 US cents/lb.
I-CIP volatility also declined to 10.0% in September from 13.7% in August, indicating a relatively calmer month for coffee prices.
New York and London Futures Prices and Arbitrage
According to the revised September 2026 Coffee Market Report published by the International Coffee Organization (ICO), New York Arabica futures averaged 280.68 US cents/lb, declining 10.4% from August.
London Robusta futures averaged 154.28 US cents/lb, down 8.0% over the same period.
The New York–London futures price differential narrowed by 13.2% to 126.40 US cents/lb, compared with 145.60 US cents/lb in August 2026.
The narrowing differential reflects a sharper decline in Arabica futures prices relative to Robusta during September, alongside increased Brazilian coffee supply.
Revision note: This article incorporates the revised ICO September 2026 figures for New York and London futures prices, their monthly changes, and the New York–London price differential.
What Pressured Coffee Prices?
Increased Brazilian supply was one of the main bearish factors affecting the market during September.
The report also points to an estimated global surplus for coffee year 2025/26 following several years of deficit.
Global production for coffee year 2025/26 is estimated at 183.6 million 60-kg bags, compared with global consumption of approximately 180.6 million bags, implying a surplus of around 3 million bags.
However, the market continues to face upside risks.
Low certified Arabica stocks, weather uncertainty and risks linked to El Niño continued to provide some support to prices.
Global Green Coffee Exports Rise 15.6%
Global green bean exports reached 10.94 million bags in August 2026, compared with 9.46 million bags in August 2025.
Robusta was the largest contributor to the increase.
Robusta exports increased 22.4% to 4.36 million bags.
Brazilian Naturals increased 21.3% to 3.57 million bags.
Other Milds increased 6.6% to 1.91 million bags.
Meanwhile, Colombian Milds declined 5.6% to 1.09 million bags.
Robusta Continues to Gain Share
Total Arabica exports reached 6.58 million bags in August 2026, up 11.6% year on year.
Despite this increase, Arabica’s share of cumulative green bean exports during the first 11 months of coffee year 2025/26 declined to 59.6%, compared with 63.5% during the same period a year earlier.
According to the ICO report, this marked the first time Arabica’s share had fallen below 60% during the first 11 months of a coffee year.
Robusta’s estimated share of global coffee production also increased to 43.1% in coffee year 2025/26.
Coffee Exports by Region
Global exports of all forms of coffee increased 14.6% to 12.55 million bags in August 2026, compared with 10.95 million bags in August 2025.
Regional performance was mixed.
Asia & Oceania: exports increased 23.1% to 4.03 million bags.
South America: exports increased 20.2% to 5.98 million bags.
Africa: exports declined 1.8% to 1.74 million bags.
Caribbean, Mexico & Central America: exports declined 14.3% to 0.79 million bags.
Brazil and Viet Nam Drive Export Growth
Brazil and Viet Nam were among the strongest drivers of coffee export growth during the period.
Viet Nam’s Robusta exports increased 69.2% to 1.78 million bags in August 2026, while Brazil’s Robusta exports increased 54.9% to 0.96 million bags.
Viet Nam’s exports of all forms of coffee increased 48.0% to 2.24 million bags, while Brazil’s total coffee exports increased 34.5% to 4.28 million bags.
Soluble Coffee Exports
Exports of soluble coffee increased 8.1% to 1.56 million bags in August 2026, compared with 1.44 million bags in August 2025.
Viet Nam was the largest exporter of soluble coffee during the month, shipping approximately 0.43 million bags.
Cofdar Market Read
September’s data indicates that improving supply availability is becoming an increasingly important factor in the global coffee market.
After an extended period dominated by concerns around production and inventories, fresh Brazilian supply has started to exert downward pressure on prices.
At the same time, Robusta continues to strengthen its position in global coffee trade, supported by strong export growth from Viet Nam and Brazil and a declining Arabica share of cumulative green bean exports.
Lower prices, however, do not mean that market risks have disappeared. Tight certified Arabica stocks, weather uncertainty and continued shifts in production and trade flows may still generate renewed volatility.
For buyers and suppliers, understanding the market requires more than following daily prices. Export flows, production, consumption, origin performance and changes in global trade patterns all contribute to a clearer commercial view of the market.
